2-Ethoxyphenol (CAS: 94-71-3) is the monoethyl ether of catechol, a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid at room temperature that can partially solidify at low temperature, with a mild, characteristic odor. The molecule contains both a phenolic hydroxyl group and an ethoxy group, combining the reactivity of phenols and ethers, making it an important bifunctional intermediate in drug synthesis.
The phenolic hydroxyl group is weakly acidic and can undergo salt formation, etherification, and esterification, and can also be oxidized to quinone-type structures; the ethoxy group is stable and alkali-resistant. Activated by the combined electron-donating effect of the hydroxyl and ethoxy groups, the ring readily undergoes electrophilic substitution reactions such as bromination, nitration, and sulfonation, providing a convenient route for constructing various ortho-substituted benzene-ring derivatives.
Applications: Sole industrial raw material for ethyl vanillin; bifunctional phenol-ether intermediate for pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis.
