2-Methylbenzoic acid (o-toluic acid) is a white prismatic or needle-like crystal, the ortho isomer of methylbenzoic acid, widely used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, dyes, and plasticizers. It has a melting point of 103-105℃, is soluble in ethanol, ether, and chloroform, slightly soluble in water, with an assay above 99.0%.
The carboxyl group of 2-methylbenzoic acid can undergo salt formation, esterification, acid chlorination, amidation, and reduction; the benzylic hydrogen of the ortho-methyl group is relatively reactive and can be halogenated or oxidized (to give phthalic-acid derivatives). Intramolecular ortho substituents can also influence reaction selectivity through hydrogen bonding or steric effects.
Applications: Key raw material for rice-field herbicides (bensulfuron-methyl, pyrazosulfuron) and strobilurin fungicides (trifloxystrobin); ester derivatives with fruity and floral notes.
