Aminoacetonitrile hydrochloride, also known as glycinonitrile hydrochloride, is one of the structurally simplest α-aminonitriles, a white or pale yellow hygroscopic crystalline powder at room temperature. It is readily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and methanol, tends to absorb moisture and gradually turn red on exposure to air, and is an important pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediate. The product should be stored sealed in a cool, dry place.
The nitrile group can undergo hydrolysis (to give glycine), addition, and reduction (to give ethylenediamine); the basicity and nucleophilicity of the α-amino group allow it to condense with carbonyl compounds. α-Aminonitriles are key building blocks for synthesizing important heterocycles and amino acids such as imidazoles, thiazoles, purines, and histidine, and are widely used in drug synthesis.
Applications: Key building block for imidazole, thiazole, purine and histidine synthesis; starting material for glycine and β-blockers (timolol); main raw material of the plant growth regulator thidiazuron.
