4-Methoxybenzoyl chloride (p-anisoyl chloride) is a colorless liquid or low-melting solid, an important aromatic acyl chloride intermediate with a pungent odor that decomposes on contact with water or alcohols. It has a melting point of 16-19℃, a boiling point of 263℃, an assay above 99.0%, with acid anhydride and acid-residue levels tightly controlled.
The acyl chloride group can undergo alcoholysis (to give p-anisic esters), ammonolysis (to give amides), hydrolysis, and Friedel-Crafts acylation; the methoxy group acts as an ortho/para director for electrophilic substitution on the ring, allowing construction of polysubstituted anisic-acid derivatives.
Applications: Raw material of UV absorbers (p-methoxycinnamate esters) for sunscreens and skincare; mild acylating agent for complex drug molecules; anisic fragrance synthesis.
