Terephthalaldehyde appears as an off-white to white needle-like crystalline powder, with water solubility of about 3 g/L at 50℃, readily soluble in ethanol, ether, and hot water. It is an important fine-chemical raw material downstream of p-xylene; because each end of the molecule bears a reactive aldehyde group, it has dual properties as both a monomer and an intermediate, and is an important basic raw material in the dye, fluorescent whitening agent, pharmaceutical, fragrance, and polymer material fields.

Both aldehyde groups can independently undergo nucleophilic addition, condensation (e.g., forming Schiff bases with amines, Knoevenagel condensation with active methylene compounds), oxidation (to give terephthalic acid), and reduction (to give terephthalyl alcohol); it can also react with bis-nucleophiles to build bis-heterocyclic structures, making it a core raw material for synthesizing linear polymer monomers, bifunctional ligands, and symmetric drugs.

Applications: Key raw material for fluorescent brighteners ER and PS-1, SBQ photosensitive monomers and high-fastness dyes; pharma and agrochemical intermediates; covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and functional polymers.
