tert-Butylhydrazine hydrochloride is a monoalkylhydrazine hydrochloride formed by replacing one hydrogen atom of hydrazine with a tert-butyl group. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature, readily soluble in water, and exhibits the reducing and basic properties typical of hydrazine compounds. It has the molecular formula C4H13ClN2 and the structural formula (CH3)3CNHNH2·HCl, a monosubstituted hydrazine hydrochloride. The hydrazine group (–NHNH2) is strongly reducing and basic, with both nitrogen atoms bearing lone pairs, enabling a range of reactions: condensation with aldehydes/ketones to give hydrazones; reaction with acyl chlorides to give acylhydrazides; and reaction with nitrous acid to give azides. The bulky tert-butyl group has a strong electron-donating effect and significant steric hindrance, influencing the reactivity and selectivity of the hydrazine group.
