2-Methylbenzonitrile (o-tolunitrile) is a colorless liquid, an important aromatic nitrile intermediate for pharmaceuticals and pesticides. It has a boiling point of 205℃, is insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol and ether, with an assay above 99%.
The nitrile group can undergo hydrolysis (to give the carboxylic acid), alcoholysis (to give the ester), reduction (to give the benzylamine), addition with Grignard/organolithium reagents (to give ketones), and addition with H2S (to give the thioamide); it can also introduce an amide group via the Ritter reaction. The ortho-methyl group can be oxidized to a carboxyl group, forming phthalic-acid derivatives.
Applications: Core raw material of fluorescent brighteners CBS-X and OB-1 for textiles, paper and plastics; muscle relaxant intermediates; disperse dyes.
