4-Methylbenzonitrile (p-tolunitrile) is a white crystal or colorless liquid, an important aromatic nitrile intermediate widely used in pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes. It is insoluble in water and soluble in ethanol and ether.
The nitrile group can be hydrolyzed to the carboxylic acid (4-methylbenzoic acid), alcoholyzed to the ester, reduced to 4-methylbenzylamine, or added to organometallic reagents to give ketones; the benzylic methyl group can be halogenated or oxidized, providing routes to construct para-difunctional derivatives (such as p-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid).
Applications: Dual-path intermediate — hydrolysis gives p-toluic acid, reduction gives p-methylbenzylamine; used in herbicides, plant growth regulators, liquid crystals and fluorescent brighteners.
